Mini gastric bypass
MGB, short for mini gastric bypass , is a minimally invasive method that partitions the stomach into an elongated, slender tube and a separate larger section. The smaller part of the stomach is attached about 6 feet down in the small intestine while the larger stomach area is not attached and is sealed off. The small section of the stomach doesn't allow the patient to eat the quantities of food they did before the mini gastric bypass operation. The second active part of the operation is that the bypassed portion of the small intestine decreases caloric absorption. Most mini gastric bypass patients experience an average weight loss of about 140 pounds - with their initial weight being situated around 280 - 300 pounds.
Pros and cons for mini gastric bypass surgery
In most baritric surgery procedures, the benefits outweigh the risks. MGB was also found to be very effective in helping the patient get rid of excess weight. The safety levels of mini gastric bypass procedures are high and complication rates are situated around 5%. However, such a procedure should mostly be performed on severe obesity cases - mini gastric bypass is not meant for patients looking to loose a few pounds. In fact, mini gastric bypass is a serious procedure that will alter the life of the patient, so maximum seriousness is required.
What results to expect?
This procedure represents a drastic lifestyle change. Patients undergoing mini gastric bypass surgery should make sure they are determined enough to continue the weight loss program months and years after the surgery. In fact, positive results are often seen on a prolonged period of time (somewhere around 12 - 16 months). The weight loss is not immediate and irreversible. The mini gastric bypass procedure takes care of the physical part of the process, but the patient must be ready to deal with the psychological consequences of the surgery and related lifestyle changes. Many other positive effects accompany a successful mini gastric bypass procedure: reduced blood pressure, elimination of sleep apnea, lowered cholesterol, reduced chances of developing diabetes, lowered arthritic pain and a few others.
