Gastric bypass plastic surgery
The growing popularity of gastric bypass surgery to treat morbid obesity, lead to an influx of patients in gastric bypass plastic surgery procedures to contour their body According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), this trend is on the rise, as people wish to eliminate the scars that are left over the surgical procedure. More than 52,000 body contouring procedures were performed for weight loss patients in 2003 and body contouring operations performed for gastric bypass patients increased by 36 percent in 2004. The increasing trend for this type of operation, as well as the fact that now more people have access to such surgery, also lead to this boom of gastric bypass plastic surgery requests. Estimates show that more than 144,000 patients will have bariatric surgery in 2004. More than 103,000 people underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2003, compared to 67,000 patients who had the surgery in 2002. Over 60 % of Americans aged 20 years and older are overweight, so the demand for gastric bypass plastic surgery is expected to rise even faster in 2006.
