Diet after gastric bypass surgery
Protein is needed right after surgery as it allows the wounds to heal properly. Proteins found in the diet will help preserve muscle tissue and help the body loose weight. Foods like lean red meat or pork, chicken or turkey without the skin, fish, eggs, and cheese are high in protein and low in fat, so recommendable for the diet after gastric bypass surgery.
Sugary foods are something you should avoid during your diet after gastric bypass surgery. Here are a few sugary foods: candy, cookies, ice cream, milkshakes, sodas, sweetened juices. Such foods are high in calories and fat and they make weight loss difficult. Eating sweet foods promotes "dumping," a reaction of the body that may occur after the operation. Sugary foods don't provide the needed minerals for the calories they take and are a poor choice in your diet after gastric bypass surgery .
Fat reflux is often a condition that happens after surgery - it is a back-up of stomach acid that causes heartburn. Diarrhea, nausea and stomach discomfort are often present when fatty food is consumed.
Fiber is also limited on the gastric bypass diet. There is less gastric acid available to digest such food types.
Vitamins & Minerals such as Iron, folate, vitamin B-12, and calcium are often required as supplements after the surgical procedure, as part of a complete diet after gastric bypass surgery. |
